This Danish learning program is for those who want to understand and speak authentic Danish. The program is based on the first episode from the Danish Netflix show Rita.

We work with the real spoken Danish and learn from it but we also explore the ways to use series and film to really learn effectively.

What will your language learning contribution look like?

You watch the first episode of a show with or without subtitles, with the help of a vocabulary list or with a free tool Language Reactor, that will give you both Danish and English subtitles. Then you book a 30 min lesson with me and we talk about it.

If you want to get more out of it, you will dive into the exercises from the Rita - Worksheet where you will improve your listening, speaking, vocabulary and will show you how to use shows or movies for effective language learning.

What is the show about?

The Danish TV show 'Rita' features the bold and independent Rita Madsen, an unconventional elementary school teacher and single mother of three. Known for her sharp wit and directness, Rita is adored by her students but often clashes with colleagues, parents, and her family. The show premiered in 2012 and has garnered international success and accolades.

Who will ensure that you learn the most from this experience?

My name is Daniela Hummelgren; I hold a Master's in Danish Language and Literature. I have a Danish husband and two bilingual Czech-Danish kids.

With Rita, we are not going through yet another lesson on this and this level, explaining to you how Denmark works. This comedy show is much more lively material than you have ever worked with, and we use it to observe authentic language. Through specialised listening and speaking exercises, you'll get much closer to the often elusive Danish, learning how to process it and continue learning in the future.

What are the terms and conditions?

When do we meet?

You book the call online, time slots are open Monday-Wednesday and Friday between 8:30 and 14:15.

How is the program delivered?

The material is in a Google Docs, you get a link after booking the call. You need to make a copy to start working on it.

What is the adequate Danish language level?

Ideally, you are intermediate, but everybody will have fun and will learn something. The subtitles are both in English and Danish.

Where can I find the show “Rita” and is it free?

You need to have a Netflix or TV2 account. Note: TV2 offers a 7-day free trial.
